Alex’s Funeral Address

Alex’s Funeral Address
July 15, 2008
Written and delivered by Olivia Soderborg

As I was looking around and noticing all of the people dressed in orange yesterday and today, I am reminded of a letter I received from Alex last Christmas while I was on my mission. He said, “Besides baptisms, retention, and money what do you want for Christmas? Remember if it’s clothes we’ll need sizes for tops and bottoms. Now don’t get weird, I can pick out good lookin’ stuff. I just don’t choose to.” I’m sure if Alex could have chosen something to wear to for this occasion, it would have been something orange.

Answers to Prayers

Sacrament Meeting Talk – Dec 23, 2007

We know that when God answers our prayers he often uses other people to help Him answer them. And he sometimes uses us to answer the prayers of others.
I wonder, in the answering of our prayers, if he ever utilizes the input of our loved ones from the other side.
You see, I figure that Bro Goode was either inspired…by my dad, or he had a stupor of thought, but just wouldn’t give it up…when he asked me to speak…Let me explain. (Read the article)

Service

During His ministry on the earth, Christ spent His time serving and helping others. True disciples of Christ do likewise. The Savior said, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35).

As I see it, there are two kinds of service: one, is the service we do as we fulfill our Church callings; the other, is the service we willingly give to those around us, because we (are taught to) care.1

So, what exactly is service? (Read the article)

Following the Prophets: Food Storage

Sacrament Meeting Talk – April 22, 2007

** Food Storage **

Good Afternoon sisters & Brothers, My prayer is that the spirit will speak here today.

Let us begin with D&C 59: 16 – 20

“16 Verily I say, that inasmuch as ye do this, (”this” being repenting, fasting & praying – taken from the scriptures above)the fulness of the earth is yours, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and that which climbeth upon the trees and walketh upon the earth;17 Yea, and the herb, and the good things which come of the earth, whether for food or for raiment, or for houses, or for barns, or for orchards, or for gardens, or for vineyards;18 Yea, all things which come of the earth, in the season thereof, ( I had a sister tell me once that with the grocery stores around everything was in season year around) are made for the benefit and the use of man, both to please the eye and to gladden the heart;19 Yea, for food and the raiment, for taste and for smell, to strengthen the body and to enliven the soul.20 And it pleaseth God that he hath given all these things unto man; for unto this end were they made to be used, with judgment, not to excess, neither by extortion.” (Read the article)

Easter

Easter

Acts 12:4 is the only place in the Bible that the word “Easter” is used. In the foot notes it is mentioned that it could be changed to “Passover”. My husband and I had quite a discussion about this term. This feast of Easter came in the Spring Equinox / or about the time of Passover.

There was an interesting news segment about a Jewish family that was observing the Passover. Each item on the plate was symbolic and there was a prayer or song after each type of food that was to be eaten. The Jews, because of their traditions of their fathers, even those according to their faith, are still waiting. One of these traditions is to have an extra plate at the table and the door open, incase Elijah happens to stop in and want to share the Passover with the family.

What are these people waiting for? (Read the article)
